"As demonstrated in this festival, the coffee industry is moving towards sustainable coffee farming and integrated supply chains to improve the quality of the product, the ecosystem, and benefit all stakeholders involved. We have shown that it is possible to achieve better coffee, while also promoting the welfare of stakeholders and caring for the environment." stated Suryo Tutuko, CEO of Roemah Indonesia BV.

Roemah Indonesia BV will be present at the Amsterdam Coffee Festival from March 30th to April 1st, 2023 at Westergas, showcasing two of renowned Indonesian cafes (toko) and a coffee cooperative from West Java that focuses on coffee preservation. They will be demonstrating their specialties and offering them for you to experience.

  1. Kopi TUKU  has brought a new 3rd wave of coffee revolution to Indonesia by introducing a coffee-milk beverage with coconut sugar called Kopi Susu Gula Aren, which has become a hit. Despite fierce competition in the booming coffee shop industry, Tuku Coffee Shop has managed to achieve success and survive as a local brand, thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit of its founder Andanu Prasetyo or commonly known as Tyo. He has also involved the local community in the development of his business and initially opened a Kopi Tuku outlet for them.  Tyo saw the potential of the coffe industry while conducting reseach for his collefe assignments. This inspired him to trasnform his distribution business into a local coffee shop and establish his own coffee brand. His focus is not solely on the success of the business, but also on ensuring smooth operation and continuolsy improving it through new product offerings and innovative approaches. By utilizing technology, such as online motorcycle delivery service like GOJEK, he has maximized sales and increased their proportion  from 30% to 70%.

In the midst of the pandemic, business owners must be creative in finding ways to achieve sales targets and maintain their  businesses' existence, and Tyo has certainly risen to the challenge.

At the upcoming Amsterdam Coffee Festival 2023, coffee connoisseurs will have the opportunity to taste the deliciousness of Kopi Susu Gula Aren, a super savory, creamy, and sweet blend of palm sugar milk coffee. The menu also offers a non-palm sugar alternative.

DUA Coffee has been established since 2016, as roastery and coffee  shop that has dedicated itself to providing the best specialty coffee with a unique and approachable character. This establishment takes pride in the complexity of their coffee processing and flavour properties, all while prioritizing sustainability and creating a friendly product for their customers to enjoy on a daily basis. They have partnered with passionate farmers and producers who share the same commitment to preserving the natural environment around their farms, and growing coffee trees under ideal conditions to produce the highest quality coffee imaginable. If you're looking for a cup of coffee that is sustainably-sourced, carefully crafted, and friendly, look no further! By indulging in a cup of their coffee, not only will you satisfy your taste buds, but you'll also be supporting a shared vision for a better world.

3.    In 1998, the Asian financial crisis had a significant impact on all sectors, including smallholder coffee farmers in Indonesia. Farmers in West Java, Indonesia, were particularly affected by this crisis. Because they lacked sustainable farming knowledge, as a result, they were forced to convert forests into vegetable gardens in highland areas, which led to environmental issues and changes in land use. Unfortunately, the farmers had no other option but to resort to such measures. In addition, due to the lack of transparency in trade, the farmers were often exploited, resulting in unstable prices and undervalued products.

The Asian financial crisis exacerbated the ecological damage caused by the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. KLASIK BEAN Cooperative, as legal entity of Sunda Hejo Farmers community in West Java, with the aim of tackling  forest conservation in the area stepped in to help the farmers adopt the agroforestry farming method and start growing Arabica coffee.  This allowed coffee to grow among forest trees. Shade grown coffee improves the environment, water quality and air quality, soil health, and biodiversity . The natural condition reduces the need for water, fertilizers and pesticides. The place provided ecosystem services and attracted ecotourism. Coffee beans harvest slower but the quality increases and price stabilizes. Certainly this alleviate the effects of projected climate change by modifying the microclimate without decreasing coffee productivity. Through the cultivation of high-quality Arabica coffee and a commitment to preserving nature and producing healthy coffee, the cooperative successfully addressed the issues of unsustainable farming practices and farmer exploitation.

The establishment of the Klasik Beans Cooperative in 2011 and the application of the "conservation coffee" concept to other regions of Indonesia, such as Bener Meriah, Enrekang, and Waerebo, was a significant development. The cooperative also expanded its reach internationally by partnering with companies in the US and Europe, such as Stumptown Coffee Roaster, Gardeli Specialty Coffee, Secred Des Aromes, and KOFIO.
